Breakbeat Science
The name comes from the very dawn of Hip Hop, when DJs began searching for and isolating the percussion “Break” in Funk or Disco records, extending it for the audience to dance to. A “scientist” was a DJ or producer who had these “skills”, and because of this history, even if not entirely realized, the words Breakbeat Science subconsciously resonate deep within the psyche.
BBS Gear
Streetwear spawned by the love of music and underground culture by NYC’s DJ DB, and up and coming drum & bass and graphic artist, Norik. Its launch has been a long winding journey. Breakbeat Science started off in 1996 as the first and only record shop in the U.S. to specialize in Drum & Bass music, specifically 12″ vinyl. Opened in the East Village of NYC, by partners DB, DJ Dara, Sean the Shooter, and Paul Morris. It soon established its self as a brand with a following, producing its own music and merchandise.
As the partners matured, their interests widened and diversified, they partnered up with artist collective Surface 2 Air and openedBBS, a select lifestyle boutique in the Shibuya area of Tokyofocusing on cutting edge fashion, music, and art. The Success of BBS, coupled with crash of the music industry, particularly vinyl, pushed the parters to rethink the NY shop, and after great planning BBlessing was opened where Breakbeat Science had stood for many years. The music part of the operation (Breakbeat Science) has now moved,and merged with another great record shop in Brooklyn, Halcyon.
Since BBlessing’s design aesthetic for clothes is strictly fashion forward, DB, with his love of streetwear has partnered up with graphic artist Erik Finsrud AKA Norik, to bring BBS Gear to life. Each season the duo will co-design some of the line, while curating both budding and established artists who contribute fresh ideas to the clothing label. Some are from the fine art world, represented by established galleries in NYC, while others stake their claim in graphic design or graffiti & street art. All having an original point of view. These shirts will be limited runs and only available from the BBS Gear Store and a few select retail outlets.
BBS designs have always found an appreciative audience, whether people are aware of the history of the brand or the music.
This 1st collection entitled Science In Motion 08 is original and powerful, sometimes dark, while other times irreverent or funny.
